US could begin lifting sanctions against Iran within months: Kerry

WASHINGTON: The United States could begin lifting sanctions against Iran within months, if Tehran takes rapid measures to cooperate with international monitoring of its nuclear program, US Secretary of State John Kerry said.

Iran should, for example, open up its Fordow underground nuclear facility to international inspection and undertake to scale down the level to which it enriches uranium, US Secretary of State John Kerry said while speaking to CBS News flagship 60 Minutes.

“The United States is not going to lift the sanctions until it is clear that a very verifiable, accountable, transparent process is in place, whereby we know exactly what Iran is going be doing with its program,” Kerry said.

Kerry’s comments came following a Thursday’s high-level meeting between him and Iranian Foreign Minister Muhammad Javad Zarif in New York to discuss the Iranian nuclear programme.

Talking to media persons, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that the two sides hope to be able to make progress on use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes including enrichment.
