Top security chiefs of Bulgaria resigned after resignation of Interior Minister

Monitoring Desk: Two top security chiefs of Bulgaria have resigned on Friday while Bulgarian Interior Minister Veselin Vuchkov handed in his resignation on Wednesday evening when the FBI chief James Comey was in Bulgaria, reports Dispatch News Desk news agency.

Political circles are taking these resignations as “forced resignations” and there are many theories in the air of Sofia about these rapid changes.

“Right after the two days of visit of FBI Chief to Bulgaria and his meeting with the Prime Minister, two top security chiefs of Bulgaria resigned while Bulgarian Interior Minister Veselin Vuchkov handed in his resignation on Wednesday when FBI chief was in Bulgaria. There is a possibility that backstage some coup against the Prime Minister was on that is unearth by “friends” and Prime Minister is asking all persons directly or indirectly related with this possible coup to resign”, claim sources in Sofia.

Vladimir Pisanchev, who heads the Bulgarian counter-intelligence body tabled his resignation while Chief Secretary of Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry, Svetlozar Lazarov also stepped down and sources in Prime Minister office indicate that Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said he would accept resignations.

Officials have neither confirmed nor denied the information about Pisanchev, but Borisov told reporters on Friday he was awaiting the security chief at his cabinet later during the day.

The FBI director James Comey and Prime Minister Boyko Borisov held a joint press conference in Sofia and were of the view that Bulgarian Prime Minister and he were unanimous about US help to counter crimes in Bulgaria and would continue close interaction of FBI and Bulgarian security networks.

“Together with Prime Minister Boyko Borisov we will fight against the organised crime, terrorism and cyber crimes. “We discussed some of the activities we used to do when we were younger. I hope that the progressive tie between the two agencies would continue,” the FBI Director remarked.

However official circles claim that reason for the resignation of Interior Minister Veselin Vuchkov was his disagreement with the position of the Legal Directorate with the Council of Ministers over Secretary General of the Interior Ministry Svetlozar Lazarov and Chairperson of the State Agency for National Security (SANS) Vladimir Pisanchev. The resignation was accepted by PM Boyko Borisov and Prime Minister proposed Deputy Prime Minister Rumyana Bachvarova for interior minister.

Opposition circles maintain that the decision of Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to ask for the resignation of the Secretary General of the Interior Ministry and the Chairperson of the State Agency for National Security (SANS) clears out some kind of backstairs affairs in the relations between the Prime Minister and the MRF party.

There was no comment out of the office of the official spokesman about whole situation till the filing of this report.
