TEHRAN: Iran has appointed its first ever foreign ministry spokeswoman, Marzieh Afkham, Dispatch News Desk reported on Thursday.

Afkham has been working in the ministry for nearly three decades and was head of its public relations department under former reformist President Muhammad Khatami.

Abbas Araqchi, the country’s incumbent spokesman, described Afkham as “seasoned and experienced in the field of media diplomacy.”

“Her expertise was the only factor in this appointment,” Araqchi said.
