Libyans cast votes for new parliament

TRIPOLI: The Libyan parliamentary election is being held on Wednesday amid worst violence the country is witnessing since the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Over 1.5 million voters are casting their votes to elect 200 members of House of Representatives that will replace the current interim parliament, the General National Congress.

It is hoped that the election will stabilize the country and quell the unrest that has gripped the country since the ouster of dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

The United Nations has described the election as “an important step in Libya’s transition towards stable democratic governance”.
