Iranian, Russian leaders to attend CICA summit in Shanghai

BEIJING: The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, the Russian President Vladimir Putin and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will attend the 4th summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in the Chinese city of Shanghai, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said.

The event is scheduled to be held from May 20 to 21 under the theme of increasing dialogue, mutual trust and collaboration to build a new Asia that is peaceful, stable and cooperative.

The CICA is a multi-national forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.

Its 24 members include among others Afghanistan, Azerbaijan Republic, China, Egypt, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates while nine countries and four international organizations including the United Nations have the observer status.

The CICA summit is convened every four years in order to conduct consultations, review the progress of the CICA, and set priorities for its activities.
