EU bans Indian mangoes, four vegetables

LONDON: The European Union (EU) has temporarily banned the import of Alphonso mangoes and four vegetables from India from May 1, Indian media reported on Monday.

The ban imposed by the 28-member EU will stay in place till December 2015 when the ban would be reviewed.

The ban which includes mangoes, eggplant, the taro plant, bitter gourd and snake gourd, follows a decision taken by the EU’s Standing Committee on Plant Health after 207 consignments of fruits and vegetables exported to the EU from India last year were found to be contaminated by non-European fruit flies and other pests.
