Azerbaijan celebrates Republic Day in London

LONDON: Embassy of Azerbaijan in London hosted an event to celebrate its Republic Day.

Addressing the event, Tahir Taghizade spoke of the history of the holiday, as well as highlighted the ongoing development in Azerbaijan in political, economic, cultural and tourism fields. He also provided an insight into the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

He hailed Azerbaijani-UK relations in political, economic and cultural areas, describing the UK as “a reliable partner” of Azerbaijan. Taghizade highlighted Azerbaijan`s role in strengthening the energy security of Europe. Representatives of the diplomatic corps in the UK, members of House of Lords, government officials, representatives of UK-based Azerbaijani organizations, journalist and public figures attended the event.

It was attended by co-chairman of England-Azerbaijan Society from the Azerbaijan side, the rector of Baku branch of the Moscow State University, professor Nargiz Pashayeva, and the vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva, as well as the UK officials.

The event was started a performance of Azerbaijani violinist Sabina Rakcheeva, who performed the national anthems of Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom.

The first independent democratic republic in the Muslim world, Azerbaijan, was established 97 years ago in 1918. Azerbaijan celebrates Republic Day on May 28, the day when the country was proclaimed for the first time. It is one of the brightest pages in the history of Azerbaijani people, which commemorate the country unification.
