BEIJING: A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake jolted northwest China’s Xinjiang region on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Networks Centre said.

The epicentre of the quake that struck at 5:19 pm (local time), with a depth of 12 km, was monitored at about 36.1 degrees north latitude and 82.5 degrees east longitude, the centre said in a statement, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

It was not immediately clear if it caused casualties or significant damage.
