11 killed as boat capsizes in eastern India

NEW DELHI: At least eleven persons were killed after an overcrowded boat capsized on a river in India’s eastern Orissa state.

Police said that the incident occurred when the boat carrying more than 90 persons, who were returning from a picnic, sank on the opposite banks of the Hirakud reservoir in Orissa’s Sambalpur District, about 1,300 kilometers southeast of New Delhi.

In addition, police said that nine persons were missing while 30 persons had been rescued.
