Solihull, England: A 53-year-old woman from the town of Solihull in England’s West Midlands has become the first victim of the UK’s ‘Bedroom Tax,’ the Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.
Stephanie Bottrill, who could not afford to pay an extra £20 a week for two under-occupied bedrooms in her home, died after throwing herself in front of a truck. A suicide note addressed to the woman’s 27-year-old son, Steven, said: “Don’t blame yourself for me ending my life. The only people to blame are the Government.” The Bedroom Tax, which levies cuts to social housing tenants’ benefits if their residence has an unoccupied room, came into force in Britain on April 1 this year.
