Krongpinang, Thailand: A Thai army spokesman has announced that eight soldiers have been killed in a roadside bomb attack in southern Thailand. The Dispatch News Desk reported.
Two soldiers and two civilians were also injured in the bombing in the Krongpinang district of Muslim-majority Yala province on Saturday, Colonel Pramote Promin stated.
The soldiers were returning from night duty when the bomb detonated near their military vehicle, he added. “It was a very powerful bomb that completely destroyed the truck,” Promin said. “Ten soldiers were in the truck. Eight died and two were wounded.” He added that two villagers were also injured in the attack.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police officials say the prime suspects are Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) militants, who have carried out similar attacks in the past.
More than 5,300 people have died in the nine-year-old insurgency in the Muslim-dominated south, where many Muslims complain of a long history of discrimination by Thai authorities in the Buddhist-majority nation.
