BEIJING: As many as eight armed people were killed when they attacked a police station in China’s restive far western region of Xinjiang on Monday, the authorities said.
In a statement, the Xinjiang government said that a group of nine people carrying knives attacked a police station in Shache County near the old Silk Road city of Kashgar on Monday, throwing explosive devices and setting police cars on fire.
In response, police shoot dead eight of them and captured the other one, the Xinjiang government said.
It was the latest in a string of violent incidents in the region of Xinjiang, which is home to the mostly Muslim Uighur community who want more autonomy from Beijing.
