Russia to provide $6 mln to FAO for food security of Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan
Moscow, Russia: Russia will contribute 6 million USD to help the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for providing technical assistance to the governments of Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in strengthening food security and sustainable agricultural development in these countries, reports Dispatch News Desk news agency while citing Russian media.
Agrarian sector continues playing an important role in these three nations, accounting for 20% in Kyrgyzstan’s GDP and for about 27% in Tajikistan’s GDP. Almost one third of employed population in Kyrgyzstan is engaged in agriculture; the respective percentage for Armenia and Tajikistan is 40% and over 60%. The three countries have no access to sea, and their national security is largely dependent on food imports and remittances from neighboring countries
FAO technical assistance funded from Russia’s contribution will aim at supporting priority projects in these countries, said Vladimir Rakhmanin, FAO deputy general director and regional representative for Europe and Central Asia.
