“Javed Hashmi” became top trend on twitter in Pakistan after his press conference
Monitoring Desk: Senior politician Javed Hashmi was the top trend on twitter in Pakistan on Wednesday after he addressed a press conference in Multan.
Known as Bagi (Rebellion) in the world of politics of Pakistan, Hashmi had been convicted for treason by Martial Law rulers on 12 April 2004. He was sentenced to 23 years in prison for inciting mutiny in the army, forgery and defamation. During his three years in jail, he wrote two books titled as “Haan, Main Baaghi Hoon!” (Yes, I am a ‘Rebel!’) and “Takhta Daar Ke saaye Tale” (Under the shadow of Hanging board).
On August 3, 2007, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan under Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry granted him bail after serving approximately three and a half years in prison. He was again placed under arrest at the declaration of a state of emergency on 3 November 2007.
During his press conference on Wednesday, Hashmi claimed that only politicians are (were) accountable in Pakistan and he questioned accountability for other state institutions.
Referring to Panama Papers trial, he stated that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should be held accountable but other people whose names were in Panama papers should also be tried including a member of higher judiciary.
“Whenever the time for sacrifice comes, politicians make sacrifices. Politicians, whether it was Bhutto or anyone else, have made sacrifices. Can anyone take the name of the SC judge who was named in the Panama Papers?”, commented Hashmi who claimed that only politicians were tried in Pakistan for accountability although politicians gave sacrifices for the country.
